1. November 5, 1987:
Sachin Tendulkar, just 14, gets hisfirst feel of the international arena as one of the ball boys in the semi-final of the 1987 World Cup at Mumbai. Incidentally, this was Sunil Gavaskar’s last appearance for India.
2. November 14, 1987:
Is named alongside Sunil Gavaskar in the Bombay (as Mumbai was called then) Ranji Trophy probables.
3. December 1987:
Makes it into Bombay Ranji Trophy squad.
4. February 23-25, 1988:
Scores 326 not out in a marathon 664-run partnership with Vinod Kambli for Shardhashram Vidyamandir in their Harris Shield Inter-Schools Championship against St. Xavier’s. It was a world record for any wicket in any grade of cricket for a long time.
5. 1988:
Amasses a total of 1025 runs at an average of 102.5 in the Harris Shield.
6. 1988:
Scores back to back triple-hundreds in the semi-final and final of the Harris Shield - one of them a triple enroute to the 664-run partnership with Kambli.
7. 1988: Gets a taste of top-level cricket while fielding as a substitute for Pakistan in a practice game at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.
8. December 10-12, 1988:
Makes his first-class debut while playing for Bombay against Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy and scores an unbeaten 100 in the first innings.
9. November, 1989:
Sunil Gavaskar presents him with a pair of ultra-light pads after he scored an unbeaten 103 against Delhi in the Irani Trophy – an innings which won him a place inthe Indian team for the tour of Pakistan.
10. November 7, 1989:
Scores a hundred on Irani Trophy debut while playing for Rest of India versus Delhi.
11. November 15, 1989:
At 16, Tendulkar makes his Test debut versus Pakistan at Karachi.
12. November 24, 1989:
Scores his first international fifty in only his second Test. His knock of 59 came against Pakistan at Faisalabad.
13. December 14, 1989:
Gets hit on the nose by Waqar Younis but continues batting against the ferocious Pakistan pace attack that also included Imran Khan and Wasim Akram. He scores a brave 57 despite the painful blow.
14. December 16, 1989:
In an unofficial game against Pakistan at Peshawar, Tendulkar hits ace leg-spinner Abdul Qadir for four sixes in an over. Qadir conceded 28 runs in that over. Tendulkar remained unbeaten on53 off 18 balls.
15. February 12, 1990:
Falls agonisingly short of his first Test hundred. Is out for 88 against New Zealand at Napier. John Wright, later to become coach of Team India, takes the catch to dismiss Tendulkar.
16. August 14, 1990:
Scores his first Test hundred. The unbeaten 119 in the fourth innings helped save the Test – an effort that won him the man of the match award.

Gets his first One-Day International (ODI) man of the match award. His all-round effort of 53 and two for 39 helps India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets at Pune.
18. January 12, 1991:
Scores 159 on Duleep Trophy debut for West Zone to become the first batsman to score hundreds on Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy and Duleep Trophy debuts.

Gets his first five-wicket haul in ODIs versus Australia at Kochi. Chasing 310, Australia seemed to be on course to victory at 203 for three in the 32nd over. Tendulkar gets into the act and rattles the batsmen and leads India to victory with his spell of 5 for 32.

In a crunch game of the Coca-ColaCup tri series, Tendulkar unleashes his fury on the Australians to plunder a brilliant 143. The match is interrupted by sand storms, but Tendulkar was at his dominant best. India didn’twin the game, but managed to eliminate New Zealand and qualify for the final.
